A 明升线上 business owner served up a little soul in her celebration of Juneteenth this weekend.
共产党员的福尔摩斯, owner of Sweet Treats, swapped out her traditional decadent desserts for a more savory option on Saturday as she dished out her popular soul food cupcakes — a cornbread cupcake topped with macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a piece of fried chicken.
For the second year in a row, 福尔摩斯 offered up the specialty cupcake to pay homage to Juneteenth, 哪一个, 截至周四, 6月17日, is a federally recognized holiday.
“I wanted to bring awareness about Juneteenth,”她说. “We did this in lieu of not being able to have our celebration with our Juneteenth Committee.”
In previous years, the Juneteenth Committee celebrated in various ways including a pageant, 哪一个 was hosted by 福尔摩斯’s mother. The pandemic put celebrations on hold last year and this year, 所以福尔摩斯, who is a member of the committee, opted to host a small celebration of her own.
“I thought since we had the drive-thru we can do something just to bring awareness about what Juneteenth is and why we celebrate it,”她说. “That is basically why I did it.”
Juneteenth is the celebration of the June 19, 1865, announcement in Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation, two years after it went into effect.
President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on Thursday, making the day a federally recognized holiday, something 福尔摩斯 said is long overdue.
“I think that the sacrifices that were made by the people that built this country need to be recognized,”她说. “It needed to be a holiday and I think it gives great recognition to those that came before us who have worked so hard to see African Americans prosper.”
福尔摩斯, 谁是黑人?, female business owner, is hoping the legacy she creates with Sweet Treats is one that can help bring about change and generational wealth that were taken away a long time ago. With a supportive community like 明升线上, she feels it is a goal within reach.
“I am thankful that the community has really come and supported me,”她说. “I always say we move a little different at Sweet Treats and I’m thankful that the community has embraced the change of the things that I do. Not only with Juneteenth, but with all of the different events. I’m just thankful the community accepted it and they accept me for who I am.”
福尔摩斯 plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from Saturday’s celebration to the Juneteenth Committee, 哪一个 has started planning next year’s event.
